Supercell, the Finnish company behind popular mobile games like Brawl Stars and Clash of Clans, is thriving despite challenges in the mobile gaming market. It released its annual results for 2024, showing impressive growth, with its six games (Clash of Clans, HayDay, Boom Beach, Clash Royale, Brawl Stars, and Squad Busters) generating nearly $3 billion in sales.
“The best year so far, but only so far.” said Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen during the company’s Q4 2024 earnings call. “What I’m most proud of is that while the overall mobile gaming market didn’t grow much at all, every one of our six games did. This is the first time this has happened in 10 years.”
Key Highlights from 2024:
- Revenue: Nearly $3 billion, a 77% increase from 2023.
- Operating Profit: Around €880 million ($911.5 million).
- Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA):
2023: €492 million ($510 million)
2024: €876 million ($900 million)
Supercell’s portfolio now has over 300m monthly players
Over 15 years, Supercell has launched six games, all of which are still active. 2024 was the first time in 10 years that all of their games grew simultaneously. Supercell invested €500 million in marketing, collaborating with brands like Disney-Pixar and football star Erling Haaland for Clash of Clans.
When asked about the role of marketing in success, Paananen used an analogy: “The most important thing is to create a good game. That’s like starting a small campfire. Marketing is like pouring gasoline on it. But without the fire, the gasoline is useless.”
