Niantic, the company best known for Pokémon GO, is reportedly close to finalizing a deal to sell its gaming division to Scopely, a mobile gaming giant owned by Savvy Games Group. If the deal is completed, Pokémon GO and Niantic’s other mobile games would come under Scopely’s leadership.
Niantic’s Struggles to Replicate Pokémon GO’s Success
The deal is estimated to be worth $3.5 billion according to reports from Bloomberg, and an official announcement is expected in the coming weeks. Despite its massive fanbase, Niantic has struggled to create another hit on the scale of Pokémon GO. Over the years, the company has faced financial difficulties, leading to layoffs and multiple project cancellations.
In 2022, Niantic scrapped four major projects due to financial challenges, following the shutdown of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. While Pokémon GO remained its primary revenue driver, growing competition in the mobile gaming space made it difficult for the company to maintain dominance.
For Scopely and its parent company Savvy Games Group, this potential acquisition would significantly strengthen their position in the mobile gaming market. Savvy Games had previously acquired Scopely in 2023 for $4.9 billion, and since then, they have been expanding aggressively through various partnerships and acquisitions.
As of now, both Niantic and Scopely have declined to comment on the rumours.
