  • Warner Bros. Games closes three studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB Games San Diego.
  • WB will now prioritize Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones while aiming for profitability.
  • The company's leadership has cited the need to refocus on delivering high-quality games.

Warner Bros. Games has announced the closure of three of its development studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego.

Alongside these shutdowns, the company has also cancelled the highly anticipated Wonder Woman game, which was first revealed in 2021. The decision comes as part of a restructuring effort to focus on core franchises like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones.

As first reported by Bloomberg, these closures follow a difficult period for Warner Bros. Games, with major financial losses from recent titles. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, released in 2024, reportedly led to a $200 million loss, while Player First Games’ crossover fighting game MultiVersus is also shutting down as announced back in January this year.

According to an email obtained by Polygon, the closures were communicated to employees by Jean-Briac Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at Warner Bros. Discovery. Perrette described 2024 as a disappointing year for WB’s gaming division, which estimated $300 million in losses last year.

In a statement to Kotaku confirming the news, Warner Bros. Games expressed appreciation for the talent at the affected studios. They emphasized that this was a “strategic change”, stating this was “in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.”

The company’s leadership has also cited the need to refocus on delivering high-quality games while also being more profitable after recent underperforming releases. Warner Bros. Games has yet to make an official public statement.

WB Games San Diego was founded in 2019 and focused on multiplayer and live-service games. Monolith Productions was founded in 1994 and became a Warner Bros. Games subsidiary in 2004. The studio is best known for games like F.E.A.R., Condemned, and the Middle-earth series of games. After a run of three decades, the studio will now rest.
